Unveiling the Erotic extends the research initiated with Erotic Utopia: She’s on Fire, continuing an inquiry into how desire, visibility, and representation intersect in contemporary visual culture. The project explores the paradox of our time – a society oversaturated with sexual imagery yet devoid of genuine eroticism. Through Jessica Ekström’s live performance, we confront how patriarchal structures embedded in heterosexual pleasure shape the gaze and perception of the female body, transforming vulnerability into strength and reclaiming the erotic as a form of resistance.
Continuing this line of thought, Ekström now deepens her investigation using the force of presence to directly challenge the audience. The title itself reveals the project’s essence: a gradual, conscious unveiling of the erotic. Pornography tends to deliver a direct, one-dimensional experience aimed at consumption, whereas erotica allows for multiple layers of meaning and interpretation. By inviting the audience into this “heat” – to witness the artist performing and unveiling herself – we draw attention to the humanity of these women, who are too often reduced to mechanical or dehumanized figures within the pornographic industry. Through presence, voice, and acknowledgment, the project seeks to return the erotic to them.
